Vaccines Q & A

Why are vaccines important?

Vaccines provide us with “extra” immunity above and beyond what our bodies naturally provide. Our natural immune systems provide powerful preventive action against many types of germs, but there are some diseases that can be too powerful for our immune systems to handle or that are so uncommon, we haven’t developed natural immunity. Vaccines help provide the boost our immune systems need to successfully prevent serious diseases. Also, there are different diseases abroad, so vaccinations are important to stay healthy while travelling internationally.

What types of vaccinations does PlatinumCare LA provide?

PlatinumCare LA offers all vaccinations required by the CDC, including those required for school enrollment. The following is a partial list of the vaccines we provide:

  • Chickenpox (varicella)
  • Shingles
  • Measles, mumps and rubella
  • Tetanus, diphtheria, pertussis (whooping cough)
  • Tuberculosis
  • Hepatitis A and B
  • HPV (human papillomavirus)
  • Polio (poliomyelitis)
  • Rabies
  • Flu (Influenza)
  • Pneumonia (pneumococcal)
  • Meningitis (meningococcal)
  • Vaccinations for overseas travel

If I was immunized as a child, do I still need vaccines?

Although childhood is the time when most vaccines are administered, you still need certain vaccines as an adult to maintain protection from specific diseases. For instance, tetanus vaccines must be administered every few years to maintain immunity. Other vaccines like the shingles vaccine are primarily developed for adult patients. Plus, new vaccines are being developed which you may never have had as a child, but which could provide you with important protection.

What side effects can be caused by vaccines?

Vaccinations can cause some redness, tenderness or swelling in the injection site, and some vaccines can cause mild flu-like symptoms such as general achiness or low-grade fever. In a few rare cases, some patients may develop allergic reactions to vaccines.

How do I know which vaccines I need?

Your doctor will review your health records, your health history and other factors with you to determine which vaccines you need to stay healthy.
