STD Screenings Q & A

Why is STD screening important?

STD screenings are important because even if you haven’t engaged in behavior that could put you at risk, your partner may have. Many STDs can go undetected for long periods of time, allowing bacteria or viruses to build up in your body – and allowing you to pass the disease on to others unknowingly.

Are STDs curable?

Most STDs are curable with antibiotics, but even once you begin treatment, it’s important to be re-tested in about three months to ensure the infection has been eliminated and to make sure you haven’t been re-infected. HIV, herpes and genital warts are caused by viruses and there is no cure for these diseases at this time; however, there are treatments to help minimize symptoms and flare-ups and, in the case of HIV, slow progression.

How can I reduce my risk of getting an STD?

Using condoms (or dental dams for oral sex) each time you have sex is the most effective way to prevent STDs. It’s also critically important to be honest with your partner about your past activity, including the number of partners you’ve had so they can assess their own risk. Having regular STD screenings is another important way to prevent passing infections to someone else.

I engaged in risky sex last night. Can I be tested for an STD tomorrow?

You can be tested, but there’s very little chance an infection will test positive. That’s because it takes some time – usually six weeks or so – for disease-causing bacteria or viruses to show up in your blood or fluids.

How often should I be screened for STDs?

The U.S. Department of Health recommends annual screenings for anyone who is sexually active, and every three to six months for those who engage in risky behaviors, such as having sex while drunk or on drugs, having sex with multiple partners or having unprotected vaginal, anal or oral sex.
